I don't see much difference between a serf and a slave. It seems an effort to try too play down the plight of the British slave equivalent. American slaves could similarly grow their own food, but also be fed, housed and clothed by their owners. Slavery was considered the norm throughout much of history and practiced by all races. Africans themselves owned slaves, they themselves, sold slaves and were found far further across their social spectrum, ie the lower classes could themselves own slaves.

... but let's assume the 5% proportion holds water. That's the reason you have champions. It's been argued that the Trojan War was largely fought with champions. The Mediaeval knights were to some extent champions, at least during the High Middle Ages. Their retinues were to some extent "support staffs" and trains, not expected to do any fighting. A twelve year-old page may be really good at polishing your armour, but you're perhaps not expecting him to leap into a pole-axe mêlée. A twelve year-old drummer boy in not going to lead a charge of the Die-hards in the early 19th Century. It's "good" to have the children there because they get desensitised for when they're older and are expected to do actual fighting. Also remember that for most of human history, most human beings have since childhood many, many times seen pigs, geese, cows, chickens, deer &c., &c. as well as, often other humans, killed off brutally, often only a few metres from them. A pig is not that much different from a human being: we are quite similar animals. If you yourself have killed off ten pigs for food, I'm sure killing a human being (in spite of religious doctrine, which in almost all cases is going to be OK with it anyway) is not going to feel as bad.

I hope Ghost is doing well now and back to full strength. Really love this in depth insight. I love watching re-enactments and have a great respect and fascination for historically accurate re-enactment. I am conflicted about it becoming more of a popular spectator sport. I know jousting was always for show and entertainment. And perhaps for historical medical enthusiasts, seeing medieval injuries recreated might be of interest. I doubt modern doctors will be thrilled though. And given what we know about the dangers, and the unpredictable nature of the damage. Should we be recreating it for entertainment? Or at least, making sure that it's safe for everyone involved including the horses? I guess as a jouster yourself, you accept the risk and decide for yourself that you love doing it. I love your final message about wearing the right kit and coming away from a joust in good health and staying safe. Does more need to be done to ensure that level of safety and right kit? I see more events pushing bigger and spectacular jousting tournaments like something out of Game of Thrones. I just hope they're not compromising safety.

I think it's better to reserve that word "slavery" for the more direct transactional thing because that's really what most people are refering to and trying to prevent in a contemporary context, yeah? If you break down power dynamics and the fact that life isn't fair, then you could justify calling anything a "slavery" state in some vague way because we all need to survive and compete when we would rather not.

Of course we know what it is. A coarser kind of meat for the poor: shoulder and butt, foreleg, tongue, jowls, neck, livers, kidneys, “sweetbreads”, tripe (stomach lining), oxtails, pigs feet. Whatever runs cheap… and it’s never tenderloin.

Working in automotive and volunteering in various other bits of Victorian era mechanical engineering with lots of grease, oil and metal shavings we often use sand and any basic cheap hand soap if any of the modern fancy combination industrial grit/degreaser soaps have ran out or aren't available. It's surprising how much you can get off with just water and sand (at the expense of potentially blocking a modern sink)
